Mobile apps will continue to evolve into the future. But just what type of technologies can we expect to be integrated into these apps? This post takes a look at some of the future features that could become commonplace

Increased AR integration

AR stands for ‘augmented reality’. It involves adding computer generated visual elements to live videos of the real world. Prime examples include Snapchat and Pokemon Go. In the future, we are likely to see more apps incorporating more realistic and accurate AR features. This could include apps for retail stores that serve as virtual dressing rooms, allowing you to try on clothes virtually in your self-facing camera, or interior design apps that allow you to virtually redecorate your home.

More IoT and wearables

IoT (internet of things) technology involves linking up everyday objects to the internet so that they can be controlled or monitored using apps. Already many gadgets around the home can be linked up to apps including smart TVs, video doorbells and air conditioning units. Meanwhile, wearable tech such as smartwatches can also be linked up to apps. We could see a lot more of this tech in the future with potentially more advanced features. An example could include a refrigerator that scans its contents and tells you what to buy while grocery shopping via an app (such as telling you when milk is running low or near to its expiry date).

Generative AI features

Artificial intelligence has come a long way in the last couple years. One of the trendiest features is generative AI, which allows you to create images and written content (ranging from blog posts to stories) using text prompts. A number of apps already incorporate generative AI features (such as ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALLE 2 and copy.ai), and it is likely that more apps will find ways to incorporate generative AI in the future. This post explains how to build a generative AI solution. AI generated videos and games are likely to be the next frontier.

In-app crypto payments

More businesses are likely to accept cryptocurrency payments in the future and it’s possible that such payments will be made through apps. This could include apps for online stores that allow you to pay in crypto, or even restaurant apps that allow you to order to your table while also paying the bill upfront in crypto.

Predictive analytics

Predictive analytic programs are able to track data of your behavior and then make recommendations. This includes showing adverts of things you’ve recently been searching for, sending notifications at times of the day when you usually use an app, or showing you suggested search terms in a search bar based on previous searches. Predictive analytics is likely to become more advanced in the future to the point where it may be able to redesign its entire UI around your preferences. This could include menu apps that automatically sort dishes how often you have ordered them.
